Isabelle Hoyne

I’m Isabelle Hoyne, an Irish travel writer, photographer and publisher, and the person behind Cultured Voyages – an independent European cultural travel publication for people who want to understand the places they visit, rather than merely pass through them. I write about European cities and regions through their history, art, architecture, food, wine and everyday life, alongside the practical decisions that shape a trip: where to stay, how long to spend, what deserves your time and what can reasonably be left out. Much of my work is based on extended stays and return visits. I have spent two months living and working in Seville, a month in Florence, a month in Palermo, a month in Verona and several weeks moving through Provence, with further long stays across Italy, France, Spain and Portugal. Every guide begins with first-hand travel. I visit, photograph and research the places I write about myself, then fact-check the historical and practical information before publication. I am interested in the connection between the two: how the history of a city changes what you notice in its buildings, how food and wine reveal something about a region, and how a little context can make an ordinary street or meal considerably more meaningful. Before Cultured Voyages became my full-time work, I spent more than a decade in the corporate world, including roles in contract management, bid management and sales operations, most recently as a Senior Deal Manager at a technology company. That background still informs the way I work: I enjoy sorting through a great deal of information, finding the important thread and turning it into guidance that is useful to someone with limited time. I do not believe a travel guide becomes more helpful by recommending everything. My aim is to give you a clearer view: what I would prioritise, what I would approach with reservations, and what I would leave for another trip.
