A city to stay with
Do not judge Naples by its first few hours
Naples does not make much effort to be easy. The traffic is loud, the pavements are busy and the historic centre can feel as if it is shouting in stereo. Give it a day, however, and the city begins to make more sense: Greek foundations, Roman streets, Spanish and Bourbon power, churches, markets and ordinary life occupy the same few square miles.
I return because it is one of the few cities in Italy that still feels lived in before it feels displayed.
I would begin a Campania trip here, not pass through on the way to the coast. Naples gives Pompeii, Herculaneum and the islands their wider cultural setting, and it deserves at least one full day that is not sacrificed to a ferry timetable.

Naples is not merely a transit hub for the Amalfi Coast.
Arrive at the airport, transfer to the port, leave for somewhere prettier: Naples is often reduced to those three instructions. Doing that strips Campania of its centre. The city holds Greek and Roman Naples, Spanish and Bourbon rule, sacred culture, street life and the collections that make the wider archaeological region intelligible.
The Catacombs of San Gennaro remain my favourite experience in Naples. They carry faith, death and community in a way that is distinctly of this city, while the National Archaeological Museum and Capodimonte make the case for staying longer.

04 / Where to stay
Choose the neighbourhood before the hotel
Naples changes quickly from street to street. The historic centre places you inside its density; Via Toledo and Piazza Dante make the city easier to navigate while keeping you close to it.
On my latest visit I stayed above Piazza Dante in the top floors of a vast palazzo. The building, the view and the sense of being inside the city mattered as much as the room.

Naples is the strongest base for understanding the Bay, but the journeys beyond it need their own time. Pompeii is not a quick add-on, and Capri is not improved by a rushed ferry timetable.
