Seville
Courtyards, tapas & time between the sights
Seville can fill a day with extraordinary buildings, then persuade you that a long lunch and an aimless walk were just as good a use of your time.
That is much of its appeal for me after repeated visits and time based here. The Real Alcázar and cathedral deserve their attention; the tapas bars, small squares and distinct neighbourhoods give you reasons to stay beyond them. Use these guides to plan the parts that need planning and leave room for the rest.
Plan your Seville trip
01 / Before you book
Decide how much to fit in
Two days gives you a workable introduction to Seville’s main sights. With longer, you can spread out the big visits and spend proper time in Triana, around the Alameda de Hércules or over a meal that doesn’t have to end at a particular hour. Start with the length-of-stay guide if you are still deciding; use the itinerary once your dates are fixed.

Make room for the Alcázar
Light, water, tiles and carved surfaces make the Real Alcázar far more than a sequence of beautiful rooms. It was my first overwhelming encounter with Mudéjar architecture, and it remains the interior I would choose if you only have time for one. Allow for the gardens as well: they are a considerable part of the visit, not somewhere to squeeze in on the way out.
Then choose what else deserves your time
The cathedral offers a very different experience: immense spaces, warm stone and the Giralda rising above the city. Casa de Pilatos and the Museo de Bellas Artes make worthwhile counterpoints if you want more art and architecture without another visit on quite the same scale. The city guide will help you choose between them.

Food & neighbourhood life
Eating well in Seville
Eating in Seville needn’t mean choosing one restaurant and staying there. A few smaller stops let you try different dishes and get a feel for the city’s social life. My tapas guide separates places I’ve eaten from other established names, with enough detail to help you choose.

Start here for food
Start with a Seville food tour
I recommend doing a food tour near the start of a visit, when what you learn can shape the meals that follow. The one I took helped me understand what Sevillanos eat through the day and the history behind it, with dishes and places to seek out again. My review explains what we tried and who the tour would suit.

Leave space around the big visits
A timed entry gets one part of the day into place; it doesn’t tell you how long you’ll want to stay. Avoid putting the Alcázar, cathedral and another substantial visit back to back. You’ll enjoy Seville more if there is room to sit down between them.
Choose the season and setting that suit you
Winter has given me some of my favourite days in Seville, with more comfortable walking and quieter corners of Santa Cruz. It still brings cold mornings, and the Alcázar can be busy. For accommodation, weigh up the walk home and the evening atmosphere as carefully as proximity to the monuments; the lively Alameda and the lanes of Santa Cruz offer rather different stays.
