Granada deserves more of your attention than the time left over after the Alhambra.
The palace complex is an extraordinary reason to come, but the Albaicín’s lanes, the hills of Sacromonte and the city’s crowded tapas bars give a stay its own character. On my visits, some of the most memorable hours were spent walking as the light changed across the valley. These guides help you give the Alhambra the time it needs without losing the rest of Granada.

For a short stay, settle the Alhambra part of the plan first, then work the city around it. The two-day itinerary gives you more room to separate the palace complex from the neighbourhood walks. If you only have a day, the shorter route helps you make deliberate choices rather than attempt a compressed version of everything.

Look beyond the headline
Give the Generalife its share of the day
It is easy to spend most of your energy on the Nasrid Palaces and approach the rest of the Alhambra as an obligation. The Generalife’s gardens were a particular favourite on both my visits. Protect time and energy for the wider site, then save a separate stretch of the day for the Albaicín and Sacromonte. Seeing the complex from across the valley adds something different from walking through it.

Choose your base with the hills in mind
The lower Albaicín gave me the atmosphere I wanted: cobbles, the river and the Alhambra close at hand, with the centre still walkable. A central address can be easier if you want flatter approaches and straightforward arrivals with luggage. A useful rule
A day trip is a long-day decision
You can visit the Alhambra from Seville, but the journey asks a lot of a single day. If Granada’s neighbourhoods and evenings appeal to you as much as the palace, stay in the city. If a day trip is your only option, be clear about how much of it will be spent travelling before you book.
Winter has its own appeal
Granada can feel sharply colder than the Andalusian coast or Seville. I liked winter for the light, the walking and the chance to linger over a warm drink afterwards, but cold stone interiors and chilly evenings need some thought.
