Planning your trip to Lisbon, Portugal
Where is the best place to stay in Lisbon?
If you’re looking for accommodation near Lisbon, there are numerous neighborhoods in the city that offer a range of options for your stay. In my opinion, you can’t go wrong with any of the neighbourhoods that encompass the old historical centre of Lisbon.
I’ve visited Lisbon a couple of times and when compiling this list, I found myself gravitating towards certain areas – specifically those of the Alfama, Bairro Alt, Chiado and Baixa/Rossio neighbourhoods.
To be honest, chose any of these neighbourhoods and you cannot go wrong. They are all centrally located and each have their own vibes that will appeal to people differently.
Alfama is the city’s oldest district (it was the only one that wasn’t destroyed in the earthquake of 1755). It features a maze of winding streets and alleyways, which occupy the side of the hill that leads up to Sao Jorge castle. Expect lots of hills and characterful accommodation.
Bairro Alto is Lisbon’s ‘high district’ and is known for being the city’s bohemian quarter. It can be lively at night, so take this into consideration when choosing your accommodation.
Chiado is an artistic quarter, full of theatres, Art-Nouveau cafes and quaint shopfronts. There are lots of beautiful, colourful buildings in this area and it is perfect for those who want to be close to all of the action of downtown Lisbon.
Baixa literally means downtown and between here and Rossio is where you will find a lot of Lisbon’s main landmarks, shopping and restaurants.
What is there to do in Lisbon?
Lisbon is an absolutely fantastic city, that is full of vibrance and history and one that also has a decidedly hip, modern edge too. There is much to keep you occupied during a trip to Lisbon. Check out this post if you’re looking for things to do in Lisbon.
Frequently Asked Questions
When are the best months to find good rates on Lisbon Airbnbs?
Lisbon is popular year-round, but prices vary a lot by season. Spring and autumn tend to strike the best balance – the weather is pleasant, but you’ll still find more availability and better nightly rates than in peak summer. July and August are the most expensive months, when demand is highest.
For the very best value, though, look to winter. From December through February, hotel and apartment prices drop significantly, while the city itself stays lively with cafés, restaurants, and even festive events. I’ve written a full guide to Lisbon in Winter if you’d like to see what the city is like at that time of year.
Is Airbnb common in Lisbon?
Yes — Airbnb is very common in Lisbon, with everything from compact studios to high-end apartments available across the city. Short-term rentals have grown quickly in the past decade, so you’ll find a wide range of options whether you’re after a modern flat in Baixa or a traditional townhouse in Alfama.
Are Airbnbs legal in Lisbon?
Yes, but they are regulated. Hosts must be licensed, and listings should display a registration number. It’s worth booking only properties that show this, as it ensures they meet safety and tax requirements. I’ve never had any issues staying in licensed apartments.
Is Lisbon cracking down on Airbnbs?
Yes – in recent years, Lisbon has introduced tighter rules on short-term rentals, particularly in historic neighbourhoods where locals have been priced out. New licences are restricted in certain central areas, and some districts have limits on how many properties can be registered.
For travellers, this mainly means being mindful about where you book. Look for licensed Airbnbs, and consider how your stay impacts the local community. In many cases, choosing a hotel or guesthouse can be a more sustainable option, especially as winter often brings excellent rates at boutique hotels.
How much is the tourist tax on Lisbon Airbnbs?
Lisbon charges a municipal tourist tax of €2 per person, per night, on short stays (up to seven nights). This applies whether you’re in a hotel or an Airbnb. Many hosts include it in the booking total, while others collect it in cash at check-in — just double-check the listing details.
Which neighbourhoods are best for Airbnbs in Lisbon?
It depends what you want from your stay.
- Alfama & Mouraria – atmospheric old quarters with narrow lanes and characterful apartments.
- Baixa & Chiado – central, walkable, and great for first-time visitors.
- Príncipe Real & Madragoa – stylish, slightly quieter, with a more local feel.
- Lapa – leafy and upscale, with larger apartments and a calmer pace.
Is it better to stay in an Airbnb or hotel in Lisbon?
It comes down to preference. Airbnbs are brilliant if you want more space or to feel like you’re living in a neighbourhood. Hotels, though, often make better sense in winter when boutique stays are heavily discounted. (I wrote a full guide to Lisbon in Winter if you’d like to see why it’s such a good time for hotels.)
